Can I Be Cloned?

One for sleeping  - one for this:

Okay, three - one for sleeping, one for cleaning and one for writing.

So what?  You didn’t believe me when I said I had to clean the desk before I could get any writing done, did you?  Hah!  Shows what you know.  You thought I could just push it aside and work – there is no aside.  So today I got up with all intentions of getting this done.  In fact, I had a whole “to do” list.

  1. Clean 2 litter boxes
  2. 1 load of laundry
  3. Do dishes
  4. Clean desk

Hmmm, 1:00 p.m.  let’s see:

  1. 1 litter box cleaned
  2. Dishes soaking

Houston, I think we have a problem.

46 total marks.

Tackle it a little bit at a time - then it doesn't seem such a lot to do. That's what I keep telling myself re. the WIP. Groan. It's Sunday night here. Back to work tomorrow. Have a good week my friend!

Girlfriend, forget the laundry, the desk need attention, BADLY!:P
Sunday, February 26th 2006 @ 2:19 PM

Posted by Eve Mardis:

I know! That's what I've been telling everyone and they wouldn't believe me. And I can't exactly forget about the laundry - I must have clothes, but it could wait until tomorrow. I am sitting here with a recycle box, trash can and a box for things that need to be kept but I'm not sure where yet. Oh, and a to be shredded box. I'm working on it!

There is a school of thought that if you put everything on your desk into a big carrier bag and you don't have to retrieve anything from said carrier bag within 6 months you can throw it away... Oh, wait. It's the 'throwing away' bit that's hard. This is why I have four carrier bags full of stiff that needs to be filed 'someday' (and the day I throw it out is the day before I will actually need it...)

Good grief. Um, start the laundry, THEN tackle that desk!! I'm almost OCD about cleaning up clutter, that pic's scarey!
Sunday, February 26th 2006 @ 3:22 PM

Posted by Eve Mardis:

Kate - that's the problem - there are things in these piles that can not be thrown away - I have to separate the throw aways from the not throw ways first (not throw aways go in two piles: bills paid and things to be filed later). I have to retrieve bills TO BE PAID out of that pile. I've already found two that should have been paid last month. That's why I have late fees. I have a bag in the closet of things that need to have the same thing done to them, but THEY can wait. I'm actually making progress - the pile in front of the monitor is gone!
Brandy - don't look!
I had to empty the big desk drawer for hanging folders (for this year's bill stubs, etc.) and I had just piled the stuff on the desk. While going through it I found a Walmart receipt from Dec. 1999 - why? It had a pair of man's pants and a shirt on it. I cried. I realized that this was for the last Christmas present I bought my father as he passed away in October of the following year. Digging further I found a pet's license still on it's little cardboard mailer. It was Siobhan's (not that Siobhan!) - the cat I just had put to sleep in November. I cried again. I threw away the receipt, but I kept the pet's license - put it in the box of stuff "to be filed later". I won't even tell you about the credenza next to the desk BUT it isn't as bad as the desk was.

My step mother and dad are not much for cleaning. It took 3 of us 3 days to clean their house. When they came home my step mother was mad at started banging cupboards and said that she couldn't find anything. That was the last time my sister and me tried to clean for her.
In May of 2001, they moved from a 4 bedroom house with a basement and a garage to a 2 bedroom semi with no garage(but 3 sheds though) and the basement is a seperate apartment. They did not get rid of enough stuff. Plus whenever someone in the family move the extra stuff ends up at my parent's house.
Sunday, February 26th 2006 @ 3:55 PM

Posted by Eve Mardis:

Are you sure some of it didn't end up on my desk? LOL
The rest of my house isn't bad - there's not a lot of stuff piled up (well, we still haven't put away the stack of pillows, blankets and sheets from Glenice's visit), but you can eat off of my kitchen cabinet and stove top, my bathroom is clean. It's just this room - I LIVE HERE - and I just can't seem to keep it un-cluttered. But I have baskets to sit on the desk to put "to be filed" stuff in, something else to put bills in, etc. I just have to clean the desk to get that stuff put on it. I have got to get organized.

One advantage to having a laptop--you can carry it to another workarea! I've moved boxes from TX to NE to MN to MO that have "to be filed" written on them. Duh. In another few years, maybe I can just burn them?
Sunday, February 26th 2006 @ 4:23 PM

Posted by Eve Mardis:

And to further illustrate my point that this has to be gone through and just not scraped into a bag - I have found my new car insurance cards and this years car insurance policy. Would have had fun on March 17 when the old cards expired if I had put it in some bag, huh?
Joely - that's my fear, which is why I am determined that this stuff will not end up in boxes labeled "to be filed".
Sunday, February 26th 2006 @ 4:30 PM

Posted by Christa Runge:

See all the stuff I have to be filed goes in a drawer that I clean out a few times a year. Mostly I put things that belong together, together. Like bills. Then put everything back like the pay stubs from 15 years ago.
Sunday, February 26th 2006 @ 4:58 PM

Posted by Eve Mardis:

I know me - I'd keep finding new drawers without emptying the old ones. Nope, I have a system in mind, I just have to get it implemented. Too many bills are late or forgotten lately, so I have to put a stop to it.

Update: I can now see the top of my desk!

Your desk looks like mine- or it did until hubby moved everything on the desk to the bed. Now I can't go to sleep until I clean up the pile. Sigh. And, of course, I'm sitting here on the computer. My middle name is procrastinate. (Probably why I still haven't finished writing the book I started ages ago. Or done my homework. Or finished the laundry. Or... oh, hell. You get the idea.
Sunday, February 26th 2006 @ 9:15 PM

Posted by Eve Mardis:

Bed? Oh yeah, I still have to find it tonight - I piled all of the books that were on the desk onto the bed. But I am about 1 hour away from having the desk finished. Tonight? No, I'm going to visit a couple of blogs and then off to bed.
Butterfly - did you know that Jennifer Crusie's desk is just about as bad?
Sunday, February 26th 2006 @ 10:08 PM

Posted by ButterflyLane:

Well, I cheated. I piled most of the books and papers on the floor. Methinks I'll have to clean our room on Tuesday.
Didn't she post pictures of her desk on her blog a while back? Or was that someone else? I can't remember anymore...

Eve, there's this great little resource at www.organizedwriter.com. There's an ebook or few to buy, but there are some freebies on there too. One of the things she advocates is spending 20 minutes at the start of every day called DRAW - Declutter, Read, (can't remember what the A is), Write, and you do each bit for just 5 minutes. Set a timer and once your 5 minutes is up, stop. I used this and got sorted in just a couple of days. Give it a go, if you haven't already found it. And good luck.

What's wrong with your desk?

You, Judy, and I have the same organizational system except she can find bills and receipts quicker than we can because she actually files those as soon as she gets them/takes care of them/etc.

Where did we go wrong in training her?
Monday, February 27th 2006 @ 6:34 AM

Posted by Eve Mardis:

Danica - I'm glad I can make someone feel better :)
Shirley - In my house it's called "The Mardis Law of Flat Surfaces" - open, flat surfaces automatically draws objects.
Diane - that's sort of what I have in mind anyway. There is no reason, except for Saturday (and sometimes Thursday when the mail comes after I leave for work) for the mail to pile up on my desk. It should be taken care of right upon arrival. I have a box for recycling and one for shredding right next to my desk. And this drawer for filing is right next to me. But I'm going to check out that site for other suggestions. Thanks!
Jana - I don't know - that was your job. You had her longer than me.

I know - that's another reason to love Crusie - she makes me feel so much better. But, when I get todays blog up (which I'm working on right now), you'll notice that I have now lost the messy desk competition.

SLACKER!!!!!!!!

I did ALL the laundry yesterday (me and two half grown boys that change clothes more htan Brittany SPears), swept, (the littler box ain't my job but I did it on friday), hung 4, count them, 4 pictures in my kitchen and a poster in my son's room, & dusted one book shelf (and finished X-files season 4).....all while I should have been writing :P

I thought I'd visited your blog yesterday but I didn't see the picture of your desk nor see your cloning bit. So I guess I wasn't here.

Are you sure we aren't secret twins or something? This is what *my* desk always looks like. I'll send you a picture of my desk as soon as I find (one of the other apartmen). I don't think I have one of this one yet but it's just as bad only in a little different way. I've got a foot-high box sitting to my left, followed by a pile of junk between 8" and 10" high. Then comes my monitor and my keyboard and mouse and on my right I've got a pile of summer stuff from the holiday that hasn't found a permanent home yet, an English grammar, a Kleenex box and a container with odds and ends. The question is: will it ever look any different? I'm a first-class packrat Can I ever really change myself? I certainly hope so. Maybe when...

Posted by Eve Mardis:

Cece - to repeat - I know where you are
Ruby - we change when we have to. I need to start throwing out things, etc., because I know that the time is coming when my job with mom is over and I'll have to move into a 1 bedroom apartment. I have over 30 years of junk collected here. Yikes!
