Weekend Weport

  • Mood: Sleepy, sleepy girl

Little late this morning as I re-read what I wrote last night and it was boooorrrrring!  The weekend was a lot more exciting in person than in print.  Of course, it would have been a lot better had we had half-nekkid cabana boys serving our drinks Saturday night.  Susie arrived at 5:00, the pizza shortly after and then the games began!  We had a great night playing games from TV trivia to Uno (which I wouldn’t recommend learning to play when you have a buzz – all that reversing gets much more confusing).  And yes, we had wine coolers, margaritas, fuzzy navels, etc.  And NO Jennifer – no hangover!  Sunday was really great though.  Glenice and I started out at Borders (which had a great buy 4 romances, get another one for free sale going – guess what I did?) where I rearranged Jill’s books – so sue me.  Then over to The Saltgrass Steakhouse for Glenice’s early birthday lunch.  I had never been there before and I’m in love.  The steak was soooo good!  It was a little on the expensive side so it’s not an every week kind of place, but for special occasions from now on – yeah!  The restaurant is only in Texas right now, but the waitress said that there are plans for expansion.  So if one ever comes to your part of the world go – do not pass go, do not collect $200.  After that we headed for my bookstore where Glenice was in book heaven.  In fact, she bought so many books she could barely get her suitcase closed!

We ended the afternoon by taking a drive south to the town of Waxahachie (Wackyhacky to some of us) where they have beautiful old homes – in fact, they have an annual event called the Gingerbread Trail – and one of the most beautiful courthouses in Texas (probably the country).  Wackyhacky is the county seat of Ellis County.  Anyway, James Michener called the courthouse “a fairy tale palace – one of the finest buildings in Texas”.  Here’s a picture of it – see for yourself.

Waxahachie is also known as The Movie Capitol of Texas because it’s town square is almost totally intact – a step back in time.  Many movies have been filmed there, including: Bonnie and Clyde, The Trip to Bountiful, Tender Mercies, and Places in the Heart.  I guess it helps if it’s the boyhood home of playwright Horton Foote and director Robert Benton – they often had Waxahachie as a backdrop to their stories.

Anyway, that was pretty much our weekend (just hung around again on Monday) – I know, more interesting in person than in print – but it was great!  Honest!

Oh, and contrary to what Bebo said – I suggested taking group pictures and got “the look” from both her and Glenice – I tried, not the other way around!  I did get one of Susie, but I don’t know if she would want me to post it or not.

31 total marks.

Sounds like you had a great time! The court house does look like a fairy palace. Neat--I love stuff like that.

You had a good time!!! Yeay!!! So they have brick buildings in Texas?? Kidding (I did watch Dallas afterall)

I am envious of the book shopping--actually just grown up browsing. I think I might run away this Saturday and do the same--except I just remembered I promised to take DD to get her some clothes for her birthday!! Oh well, that'll be fun :)

Yes Glenice - even without the cabana boys. I don't know if Bebo can get on-line at work today or not, but I'll wait and see because she oughta answer your question.
Joely - I was going to put in a link to some of the homes on the Gingerbread Trail, maybe later. Glenice just sent me the picture she took of the house we fell in love with - if I have time later I may add it to today's post - if not, then tomorrow.
Toni - yes, in fact my house is brick - so there! :) My Amazon credit card says I love to go book shopping too.
Dennie - they wouldn't let me - I had the camera next to me and everything!
Susan - it's been a long time since I've had that great of a weekend. Susie thinks we should do it more often, so I think the three of us may do it (the Saturday night game night) every couple of months or so.

Eve cabana boys would have made to evening complete.
Glenice every time I visit my sister in Toronto, I know to bring an extra bag because I end with twice as many things as I did when I went up there.

What a marvelous weekend, I'm so jealous. We play Uno almost every night. I hate losing to my 6 year old all the time. Maybe I should get hammered first :P

Posted by Eve Mardis:

Christa - you got it sweetie!
Rene - getting hammered doesn't make you play any better, but it sure makes it so you don't really care if you lose.
Okay - I'm not even done with my blogging but my morning has caught up with me - I only made it to the J's - so I'll pick up after my nap!

I would love to see a place where so many movies were filmed. When I toured the studios of Universal, they have the square that was used in Back to the Future, and I can't help but feel a bit awed.

Except for getting as far as even a buzz, this really sounds like my kind of fun: games, sightseeing (that is a beautiful courthouse or any kind of house), having a good time with friends. Want to come and celebrate my birthday? We have "gingerbread houses" around here too. I do like my occasional drink but once I start to feel nauseated, which I often do without having a drop of alcohol these days, I tend to quit.

Oh, yeah. If I weren't in deep hock, I'd do the book thing, too--definitely.

So glad you had a really good time.

Scott - the bus station from The Trip to Bountiful is the only one that I recognized. The downtown area is an antique hunters dream.
Thanks Shirley.
Jordan - our courthouse isn't quite as pretty, but Big Red is just as impressive.
Yeah Ruby - wait until I post the house we liked tomorrow - it's gorgeous! I get a buzz fairly easily because I don't drink that often - I had more drinks Saturday night (3) than I had in the total of 2005.
Yes Siobhan - very Brit.
Thanks Brandy!
Christa - rofl
Danica - Hi! It's a nice day trip.

I wish! But I am B-R-O-K-E.

I still haven't gotten all my income tax stuff together to take to the accountant and will probably keep my head buried in receipts the majority of the week.

Thanks for the invite, tho'.
