The Million Dollar Question

  • Mood: Okay
  • Music: Money,Money,Money,Money

Just Aidan, isn’t he cute?

If someone were to give you a million dollars (tax-free) with the only stipulations being that you couldn’t give it away or spend it on anybody else, what would you spend it on?  Me?  That’s easy.

1.        A brand new car – nothing fancy, just a Toyota Camry, fully loaded.

2.        A house – a home of my own – again, nothing fancy – just mine.

3.        I’d build a bookstore – I’ve always wanted one.  And I would only sell romances and mysteries.

4.        A computer with all the bells and whistles.

5.        A big-screen TV

How about you?

60 total marks.

First, I'd pay off all our debt. Then I'd buy some land out in the country, complete with horses, and build a log cabin. Ooooh, boy, we got some fancy tastes, huh?

Posted by Diane:

That would still be my animal sanctuary, then. Plus clear my debts.
Tuesday, February 7th 2006 @ 7:00 AM

Posted by Scott:

Ooh, debt first, new house in the country overlooking a lake, perhaps a waterfall nearby. Then I'd keep the rest to subsidize my effort to only write for the next year.
Tuesday, February 7th 2006 @ 7:43 AM

Posted by Bebo:

Well, since I'm about >this close< to being at zero-debt, that would come first. Then - the cars. Yeah, 2 of them, because one would be a hybrid to assuage my "earth mother" self, and the other would be a muscle car, preferably something classic like an Astin Martin to stroke my Speed-demon self. Then, the house, like y'all something modest & MINE. Then... the travelling. Trips to Europe, the British Isles, Canada, Hawaii & Alaska... And a HUGE chunk to be invested to subsidize my currently-nonexistent retirement fund. Because I would really like to retire one day, so I can be the next Rosamund Pulcher (published later in life, etc...)

Cute cat---I'd hire a finacial consultant.
Tuesday, February 7th 2006 @ 9:15 AM

Posted by Eve Mardis:

Interesting answers - debts are important, and then ensuring future security.
Peggy - Aidan is a cutie. He was a formerly abused kitten who is now a spoiled rotten brat. But beautiful. No financial consultant until after I buy the frivolous stuff because they would advise me not to.

On the other hand, it might be fun to take a chunk of it & go to Vegas... (after investing for my retirement - hey my Momma didn't raise no fool!) (No comments from the peanut gallery!)

Bigger house with an office with a door. 2 environmentally friendly cars--an electric one and a hybrid (or something that runs on veggy oil). I'd install geothermal heating in my home and my parents home. Kids education investments and put something into retirement.

Then I'd take $1000 and go clothes shopping just for fun :) And I'd buy a fish tank and maybe get a cat ;-) and someone in once a week to help clean the palace :)
Tuesday, February 7th 2006 @ 9:48 AM

Posted by Glenice:

ahhh a million all to myself???? Well that really is not that hard!
1. New BIG house...nothing fancy just big!
2. Then I would buy new cars! Again, not really fancy ones but I would have--300SL, Jeep, Pickup, oh and a SUV (for traveling)
3. Lots of traveling :) not that I don't do that now, but I would go to Ireland, Italy, Greece and I would love to go back to England.
4. Oh and my new house would have to be on about 20 acres :)
5. Make sure I left some for retirement...of course I think I might have already spent it all!!! Big houses are not cheap! :)

Wait - did I see cat in Toni's answer? Oooooh
Tuesday, February 7th 2006 @ 9:52 AM

Hey Glenice - sounds good to me - of course, you're right - you probably did spend it all on that house and 20 acres! Friday!!!!!!

1. a brand new house (even bigger than the one we'll someday get to move into...)
2. the spiffiest Apple computer on the market
3. HD plasma TV
4. books
5. CDs
6. DVDs
7. even clothes (though you notice how far down the list they come

I'm sure I could think of some other things, but that's it off the top of my head.

I'd go on one of those round the world cruises on Crystal or Seabourne, one of the really pricey ones. I'd buy a Bentley Continental GT and an Aston Martin DB9. And a Jag, maybe an XKR or an XJR, can't decide.

I'd visit the U.S.A. as I've never been then head on south to Mexico and the rest of Latin America (I've wanted to go there seems like forever as I teach Spanish): Machu Picchu in Peru, the Angel Falls in Venezuela, oh loads of places too numerous to mention. Oh yeah, I'd go on to Hawai, and Australia, and China, and, and, and. I'd take my DH with me of course. Then, with the rest of the money we'd build a house in the Veneto in Italy and have all our friends come and stay. Wouldn't all that be great?

Go away for a few hours and you have a convention!
Oh the wish lists we have, trips, houses (yeah Tori - you'll get in yours one of these days), visiting friends (I'd like to see Macho Pichu too) and then Rene wants to open a car lot

If I had a million dollars I would pay off debts,Jill's books, buy a house, books, get a car and driver(cause I ain;t allowed to drive, this way I don't have to get my parent's to drive me places),books, better computer(not that it matters if I'm computer illiterate) books, new furniture, books, bigger TV, did I mention books, bigger shelf unit for books.

And Susan - thank you - I think he's the loveliest little furboy in the world, but I'm just an teensy bit prejudice
Tuesday, February 7th 2006 @ 1:00 PM

Posted by Eve Mardis:

So Christa - why don't you buy some books with the money?
Aidan - someone threw him in a trash dumpster when he was approximately 7 weeks old. He had been hit or kicked so hard that his back leg is useless (he will probably have to have it removed some day), they had burned some of his whiskers and cut the others. He is amazingly gentle (although he has a real big mischievous streak) and has the softest fur that I have ever felt on a cat (even the vet says so). He is part Maine Coone cat and the vet says that he is also part bunny rabbit (the fur is that soft) and part goat (Aidan will eat silk flowers, plastic grocery bags, etc. - we think it's a leftover thing from the trash dumpster). He was found about an hour before the trash truck came by. He had cried so much that he was hoarse for a couple of days.

Nice big enviornmentally friendly house w/land (my bedroom/bath/office suite would be on one end and the kids on the other.
4-wheelers
a basketball court for the kids
a nanny (hey it's my million!)

If I had a million dollars....I'd pay off OUR debt, go back to school, travel to Scotland, buy books, buy (finally) some clothes, buy land and build a craftsman style house with soalr features, and if there was anything left (HA!), I'd put money up for retirement.

Christa - we can't forget the cabana boy.
Toni - I forgot about the kitten - so we'll trade the lawnmower for the kitten, but then there's the house for your parents - so, sorry, you've lost the money.
Susie, Jennifer and Brandy want trips.
I love Craftsman homes.
Aidan says Thank you.

A million, eh? I'd turn our house into a scrapbooking retreat and build a new one at the back of our ten acres.

I'd pay off all my debts, fence the entire property, build a concrete road to the new house in the back, and enlarge our small pool into a mini lake.

I'd invest the rest, quit my job, and sign up to substitute teach since you can still earn retirement credit if you sub 90 days a year. (Hey, I'm 6 1/2 years away from retirement. I want that extra money!)

"$1,000,000, you say?" asks the totally cash-strapped.

1. I'd pay off ALL my debts, even the ones I don't HAVE to pay back.

2. I'd get a house big enough for me and my books with enough room for people to visit, in a very peaceful setting so that I don't have to listen to anyone else's radio, vacuum cleaner, footsteps, banging, or smell nauseating cooking and perm solutions.

2. I'd hire someone to clean and cook.

3. I'd get a nice car, nothing too fancy with an exteeended warranty. No being without a car ever again. Or of course, I could get a second car.

4. I'd travel to Peru, Hong Kong, China and Australia and visit relatives and friends in HK and AUS and go exploring. I'd be able to pay to get myself "cured", I hope from this dastardly illness. A cessation of too much stress as in #1 would certainly be a step in the right direction.

5. Between my walks and travels, I'd read and read some more.

Yeah, all of us going to Ireland would be great. What I saw of it I really loved, same goes for Scotland.

Yep, traveling and reading--those would be my main indulgences.

Oh yes, #2 & #3 would also relieve a lot of stress.

And I forgot the RV. How could I? To just be able to go with the flow and some friend to accompany me would be ideal for the rest of Canada and the good old USA, maybe even Mexico.

, sniffles and a sore throat. What's the world coming to? Two colds in one winter!! That's how many I had in the whole previous 20 years. Aah, I know why. Since the news of the impending move arrived, I haven't taken my Vit. C regularly. That certainly explains the odd occurence.
