To "E" or Not to "E"

  • Mood: Hellooooooo, I just woke up
  • Music: The Sounds of Silence

That’s the question that I have for you today.  E-books.  Do you read them?  If not, why? And on the flip-side, if you do, why?

I was perusing the new Romantic Times at work last night and they had an article about the “controversy” of e-books vs. print.  It seems (and I don’t know if the article said this – I got this from one of the blogs) that some people feel that only authors not “good” enough for print have their works in the e-book format.  I know for a fact that that isn’t true.  Both Sasha White and Jordan Summers, two authors whose works I enjoy have stories in both print and e-book format.  In this technologically evolving world, people are looking for both cheaper and more sophisticated means of reading.  Sure, the initial cost of an e-book reader may be high, but I also know from pricing that the actual “books” themselves are cheaper than print.  There’s also the tree conservation aspect.

Why haven’t I switched to e-books?  Five reasons:  1) the price of the reader.  They run around $100 dollars, which is more than I make in a week.  2) it’s true that I can download them onto my computer (I have one of Sasha’s on the computer), but I do 90% of my reading in bed as relaxation before I go to sleep.  Sitting in front of the computer is not relaxing or sleep inducing. 3) Every place I’ve seen e-books you have to use a credit card to purchase them.  While I have a credit card just for books, I try not to use it too much.  I know that someday you’ll be able to go into a store and purchase the CD-ROM of an e-book right there in the bookstore.  Maybe then I’ll jump on the bandwagon. 4) Back to the computer thingy.  What if I download all of my e-books to the computer and then something goes wrong with the computer?  I know – save them.  There’s the other rub – without going into a long story, I can’t save to CD.  5) I love books – the smell of them, the feel of them – and I think there’s a part of me that is afraid that if we go to e-books, paper books will disappear.  There, I’ve said it!  I’m techno-phobic.  I’m hanging on to my old-fashioned love of books.

Why use e-books?  Well, there’s the above mentioned conservation bonus.  Plus, I’ve read where you can download umpteen amounts of books onto one little device which is about the size of a paperback (or at least fits into a purse).  Makes going on vacation a lot easier.  I’m sure there are other good things about e-books, but since I don’t read them I’m not that familiar with them.

So what about you?  Back to the questions in the beginning of the post.  What do you think about e-books?

45 total marks.

I think that ebooks are good in that they get people reading again. Microsoft Reader is downloadable free of charge and you can change the fonts, etc, to make it easier to read. I like ebooks as I can load them onto my pocket pc and take just that away with me instead of a heavy pile of paperbacks. However, I prefer "proper" books as they're easier on the eye and I just love to page turn and flick. They look good on bookshelves too.

Not actually read an e-book (though I was seriously tempted to buy the CD-rom version of Beowulf) so can't give a properly informed opinion. I don't think it's an inferior form, but I do prefer print. There is nothing that can match the feel and smell of a brand-new hardback (my vice), and I rather like having the physical things around me. (As you can tell by my new office, vbg.)

I think that if the readers were more affordable I would probably go for it. For me, it's the sitting at the desk to read them part that bothers me the most. Yeah, books do look better on the bookshelf.

Posted at the same time. Kate - I do love the smell of a new book. I also like the little treasures that can be found in an older one. Came across a book of poetry once at the bookstore where someone had written next to a beautiful love poem - "If I could express my love for you in poetry, this is what I would have said". The book was published in the 1940s - lovely.

I don't think paper books (soft or hard cover) will ever be replaced; too many of us love the paper, the smell of the book (or bookstore--I love walking into B&N), the ease and comfort of reading in bed, etc. But there are uses for ebooks and I think it's smart of authors like Sasha, Jordan and Sylvia Day to pursue both avenues. For commuters, going on vacation, etc. you can't beat the ease of ebooks. I don't have a hand-held reader or any sort, so personally I only buy a few ebooks here and there because I do have to read them on my computer. And if I'm on my computer, I want to be writing. :-)

I think it is just another format. I LOVE print books, the feel, the pretty covers, everything. I like them surrounding me on my shelves. ebooks are providing another outlet for writers, with the big houses getting more selective everyday, ebooks open the door for some originality too, don't ya think ??

But in the future who knows wha is going to happen? Paper might become too valuable to print on? I like the idea of a little 'thing' I can carry a bunch of books on. And using Microsoft reader is great to listen to books with--great for listening to your own writing (to hear the rhythm)

OK--not very coherent but kids fighting in background, dogs whining and crossing their legs, my teeth furring up and needing cleaned, must go :):P

It was very cognizant - for you
I have to admit that being able to carry around that many books in one device sounds really great. When I used to housesit - if it were a two week job or so - I used to have to pack a suitcase JUST for the books.

I have never read an e-book because I am a techno-moron. Most electronic gadgets drive me nuts. I also have a love of books, real books with pages to turn. Plus if there is a way to mess up an e-book and lose the file, it will happen to me. The initial cost is also a problem. I just like real books that are easy to read and don't require batteries.

I've never read an e-book so I really can't compare the difference but my uncle tried it and didn't care for it.

I love the smell of books too. I'm relieved to know I am not the only one!

Umm...I have bought a few ebooks. But I have to confess I really don't enjoy reading them on the screen. When I read for pleasure, it is curled in bed or on the couch. Quite often I read while waiting for my kids at school. I do think ebook publishing offers a venue for those eclectic books traditional publishers won't touch.

Keep going people, this is good. We've got a little dialogue going. Wow! I do have to say that it's really uncomfortable curling up with my computer.
Yeah Susan - there's really nothing like the smell of a new book.
Jennifer - that's my other fear - fouling up the reader and losing everything. But then, I could lose all of my books in a fire?
That's it Rene - I don't think it's because the authors aren't as good as the print ones, it's that the book is "different" from the mainstream and the publisher is more apt to try them if the output isn't that high.

I prefer books to e-books. Since I find it hard to sit in front of the computer and read a book. I also have a problem with the cost. Books do have a nice smell to them. When I went cat sitting for my sister for two weeks near Toronto, I had her take me to the Goodwill there because they have a bigger selection of books plus they are only $.50 so I didn't have to bring that many books up there but I had like 20 books to take home.

I have to HOLD THE BOOK. So there.
Friday, January 6th 2006 @ 11:48 AM

Susan - Yeah, me too on the cost. That's why I love used bookstore. Except if you saw my credit card you wouldn't know it.

Toni - you better watch it - I'll get Kate to send the English mafia! I'll get Jennifer to send her duckbilled platypus! Oops, wait a minute - Jennifer would be on your side

Um Christa - I just emailed Susan so I had her on my mind. Sorry! It's all Toni's fault!

Obviously, someone needs a nap.

OK My comments got lost somewhere....I must have forgotten to check to make sure it went through before I closed the window! Now what was my thought...I can not remember!!! I hate getting old!!!

OH I know! If I had a small device that I could hold it would be OK...especially since I travel so much....but then again...on a plane you have to shut everything down for like a 1/2 hour...that is a lot of reading time lost! :)

I too love the smell of books...what is it about them...they just don't smell the same as regular paper must be the ink on it too!

My sister is begging my to use my free ticket to go to her house and help her decorate her newly finished rec room...

I'm an old-fashioned girl when it comes to books. I have to be able to hold them in my hand and turn the pages. And electronic gizmo just isn't going to do it for me. And like you, I read in bed at night before going to sleep. So reading them on the computer isn't going to cut it either.

Glenice - It really looks like a great idea for travelers and people on the go. I was at your site the other day and nothing had changed, I'll go back now. And I suppose you could use your free ticket to go help your sister, but really, wouldn't you rather come back to Texas?
Munchkin - that's what I just said - not meant to you, ooooooh, I knew you'd go for it. Why you ...
Tori - I guess the little hand-held device wouldn't be so bad. I just can't afford one right now. They cost more than one weeks pay.
Christa - So, does the furby read a lot of books?

I like to cuddle up to a book before bed, so I can't imagine relying soley on an e-book format. I too like the smell and feel of a book. Call me old and sentimental, but I don't think you can totally replace the paper book.
Friday, January 6th 2006 @ 4:18 PM

I balanced the checkbooks, paid some bills! I, um, balanced the checkbook and paid some bills. Wait - I'm cooking a potroast right now - does that count? I don't sleep well on Thursday nights because I close the store and when I get home I'm too hyper to sleep until about 2ish. Then I'm up again at 6:00a.m. So I'm usually real tired and loopy on Fridays until I get a nap. But the cats wouldn't let me take one (only about 45 minutes), so I'm still loopy. Don't say it! But I do have a writing exercise to do tonight.

I got Furby as a late Christmas present so I've only had him for a week. He doesn't interrupt me or go to sleep when I read a Jill Shalvis book. He also says "wah" (meaning yeah) whenever I mention Jill's name. I looked up a furby dictionary at bunlimited.com so I could understand what he was saying.
